I Don't Get Boys

My brother-in-law made this video of himself a few days ago. According to every other guy who has seen it, it's "freakin' awesome." Men, what am I missing? Is this your equal and opposite reaction to our shoe shopping?

Troy, you know I love ya, baby! I just don't know why...

- CAUTION -
Things are getting pretty nasty in the comments section -
Go easy on him, girls! I promise he's a great guy!

Yeah... I don't get it. Seems kind of dangerous and scary. Shopping for shoes is nothing like that. Weird that my husband probably gets equal pleasure from shooting guns AND shopping for shoes. For real.

Guys are weird. The times I've gone out to try out the shooting guns thing, I've only come home with a sore shoulder. Not my kind of fun...but whatever floats your boat.

Classy! And he's still single?
Am I SERIOUSLY the only girl who thinks this is totally awesome?!?!?!?

Troy, that was some great you tube action. I mean it.

my 2 year old watched this with me and was very concerned that a TV was broken in the making of this video. Television is very important to her.
stupidramblings said…
With a two (2) year old, you should have stopped the video when you saw the plaid shirt. It is just too alarming. That way she wouldn't have had to see the TV.

Anyway, I found it dumb too, ladies. And I LIKE guns. I think it was a poor piece of video by any standards. And adding a soundtrack doesn't exactly "class it up."
Sarah said…
Troy, you better jump in here and defend yourself before you decide to just settle it with your guns...

I hate that movie and it seems like the author was venting a disgusting part of himself. Its scary and gross and stupid and disturbing and inane and awful. What is to like about it?
Goodness! It's YOU TUBE for heavens sake! It's not like he was aiming for an acadamy award or anything. You people are mean.

And why do guns have to be disgusting and gross and stupid and disturbing? He was not endangering the people around him. I don't understand why people think that guns and/or everyone who uses a gun is of the devil. lighten up a little. sheesh.

(I don't want to start any girl fights, really I don't.)

There is something called editing. We do it in print, and we should do it with our lives, and how we present ourselves. It's one thing to have some destructive, inane, senseless fun with a gun, quite another to post it. To POST it? But there is the question. Was this ever posted or did you just pick it up from your family passing it around? If he didn't post it anywhere, there may be some shred of redemption on the horizon. Otherwise, very very scary. I wouldn't want this person attending my school or working at my business. What was that that happened at the very end of the film clip? Did he shoot himself in the foot? If not literally, then metaphorically, he did indeed shoot himself in the foot. Sorry to sound judgemental, but honestly!

Diana, I would not want YOU working anywhere near ME, trying to get other people to edit thier lives to your feminazi man-hating liking. EWWW...get away from me! Quick.

You are hundreds of times more irritating than a person using a TV for target practice. DO YOU GET THAT AT ALL??? The sad thing is I bet you don't have any frineds good enough to let you know this, either, so you'll go on forever....

As the Bill of Rights protects my right to own an AK-47 AND to post iconic video of myself shooting it on the internet, I don't think I need to defend myself to any of the hysterical naysayers. But…

Woah! Calm down people! Nobody died. Or got hurt. Or broke any laws. Or really did anything bad at all. Sheesh. I am not “venting a disgusting part of [my]self.” I’m a twenty-something year old guy. We like shooting stuff. That’s why they sold about a trillion X-boxes this Christmas. I just shoot TV’s instead of people ON TV. You tell me which is more hateful and disgusting and disturbing. I’ve been out shooting with some of your husbands and wives and brothers and sisters and friends and we all had a great time. Shooting is fun. It’s one of America’s most popular and fastest growing sports.

I go to one of the most liberal universities in the country, so the shrill sound of a visceral reaction to guns is nothing new to me. I had fun making that video. I had fun posting it. I am having fun reading humorless responses.

So while you’re sitting there smugly touting your progressive anti-gun ideals with tolerant and enlightened phrases like “…very very scary. I wouldn't want this person attending my school or working at my business.” I’ll just keep my forty-five and my sense of humor handy and enjoy myself while not caring what you think.

You can take my gun, my camera, and my computer from me when you pry them from my cold dead hands.
Sarah said…
Thanks, Troy! But I wouldn't be brave enough to try and take your gun even if you were dead.

Anyone else feel like venting? Looks like today is the day to to it.

Well I have five things to say:

1. I am a girl.
2. I own a 12 gauge shotgun.
3. I live with a girl who owns a .22 hand gun.
4. We think our guns are cute
and
5. We love to blow the crap out of crap, especially after a long week of finals or mid-terms and we don’t think there is anything wrong with that.

p.s. I don't think you should throw out your liberal sardonicism against guns until you have actually gone with someone who enjoys the activity and done it yourself. As of yet, I still haven't taken any of my girl or guy friends shooting and had them tell me they never wanted to do it again. In fact, they all call me up begging to go as soon as the snow melts. (How can you say something as cute as a 12 gauge shot gun is "scary and gross and stupid and disturbing and inane and awful" ... Ouch! I think you hit a nerve.)

I'll have you know, my ultra-liberal PI (the scientist I work for) AND her EXTREMELY famous and respected evolutionary biologist husband are both gun nuts. In fact, her husband spends a lot of time shooting appliances. Although, not so much with the TV... Dangerous stuff in the tubes. HOwever, I know first hand that an old and busted VCR will BURST INTO FLAMES if you shoot with enough fire power.

Atleast they're not pot-shotting squirrels or kittens or something.

I love the recent comments in support of the video! Brooke Jean, whoever you are, if you are single I'm marrying you.

Rosie O'Diane, you brought that on yourself with your "edit yourself or I won't go to school with you" whine. I know it's frustrating to be "you" Rosie, but don't take it out on anything with testosterone.

Catherine, Diane, if you types are married I feel sorry for your husbands. You are mean, you have no understanding of men, and you have NO SENSE OF HUMOR. That is death to a fun happy marriage.

Tell your whimp husband to come home from drama club, or knitting club, pick up a gun and learn to be male again. If he doesn't want to shoot, at least get him to chop some wood or something....

Yeah, I grew up with brothers, but they weren't into guns. Well, not that I know of, anyway.

Actually, most of it seemed kind of silly, like shooting into the snow just to see what would happen. (I told my DH about it, and he said, "That sounds awesome!) Silliness I can handle--it was actually the double barreled gun toting that sort of freaked me out. It seemed a little violent. And no, they weren't shooting at harmless animals, but there definitely was some footage that seemed to go beyond just showing shooting as a hobby. Or as a science experiment (what's the point of shooting into a body of water, anyway?) And that's what was a little disturbing.

But blowing up the TV with a rifle--yeah, my brothers would probably do that.

The point of it all comes down to simple cause and effect. Men like to cause things to see the effect. There is action and a reaction. Shoot the ice and satisfy visual curiosity with what happens. There is nothing disturbing by this at all. Anyone who can't appreciate this is rejecting life processes and is in denial. We all did this as children to learn - and we still do this now to further learn. Therefore, shooting guns is really just learning about cause and effect and experiential process.
perk said…
by the way, shooting animals is also a very good way to see cause and effect in action. they're not so harmless as many of you think. troy.. I think its time to post video 2

I thought it was pretty awesome, but, if this were my friend or my son I would probably tell him to be careful of a couple things that seem pretty dangerous. The auto handguns that get pulled out of the side holsters must have some kind of safety on them, yet it doesn't appear that the shooter goes through the motion of undoing the safety. That must mean that he is carrying a loaded handgun in his holster with the safety off. I could be wrong, but if not, that is more danger than I would want a loved one to be in. I guess it could also be that it is a single action gun and has to be cocked before it can fire. Anyway, finishing off the TV execution style was a little over the top for my taste, but that is more of an opinion. I really love guns but I really love them safely.

Hello people. This was for a movie. Ear protection and carefully undoing the safety to make you mommies out there feel better about the safety issues in the video clip would negate all coolness.

Can't you people be cool for once?
tkf489 said…
For the safety record, during the two handed shooting clip:

The handgun on the left was a Glock 17 which features an integral trigger/safety mechanisim that makes accidental discharge nearly impossible. One of the many reasons that it (or it's .40 caliber variant) is standard issue for thousands of American law enforcement agencies.

The gun on the right is the venerable Governemnt Model 1911A1 .45 pistol invented by Utah native John Moses Browning. It has a very effective grip safety system. The 1911 (adopted in that year) was standard issue for the US Millitary through both world wars, Vietnam, and all the way into the 1980's before it was replaced. It is making a comeback and has been adopted by several special forces units.

So yeah, I'm safe. But thanks for the concern.

And yes, I wear earplugs. If any of the husbands of the harpies out there want a pair let me know.

Talk about comment o' mania from one youtube post!

For the record, almost everyone who has never handled a gun before has a slightly skewed perspective on firearms. Take a class (or find a buddy) and shoot a few targets. You won't want one, but you'll hate guns less once you understand them better.

Personally I own a totally awesome, basic black, Bennelli pump action shot gun- for predator control- of course. And I have an old tv that makes everything look green that would make great target practice.
Thanks for the idea!!

The video was all boy, that is for sure!!! Nothing wrong about it... if it isn't your taste... FINE... that is what you tube is for! Personally even though I am okay with guns, I didn't find it awesome, but know my husband would!

My bigger question is why anyone would want to show their 2 and 3 year olds this video... as well as most videos off of you tube. Do you have nothing better to do then sit at your computer with your kids watching these?!?! Maybe you should worry about that more than what Troy does (*safely*) in his spare time!!!

I think everyone is missing the point here. Which is that this clip shows destructive behavior to glaciers. This may be an "inconvenient truth" for most of you, but if we shoot up all our glaciers they will not regenerate themselves. Plus, it could be harmful to glacier worms.

I don't know what kind of a sick person would find pleasure in that. Troy, there is no good in you at all. I have been around you and you reek of greenhouse gasses. Perhaps some day global warming will "pop a cap in you" figuratively speaking.

I don't feel like writing everything I could write about this, but I once did go "shooting" with a group of people, and it was an AK-47, and the guy who owned it was gun crazy, I mean crazy. He loved it, his fiancee loved it, my husband was fine with it, but I hated it. I don't want to ever do it again. It wasn't fun, it was loud and I felt like I was in danger the entire time, and I was so terrified I almost cried. And again, the guy who owned the gun was CA-RAZY. So I personally don't have a very good impression of gun owners, I guess. I've met and talked about guns with too many of them and I just hate their viewpoints about it. And I don't like how gun-lovers like to put down gun-haters by saying they are "liberal" whatevers. Come up with something better, people. It's not all about politics anyway.

Thanks Samantha for fueling the fire. Now we can let the liberal/ conservative debate rage. Come on. You know you all want to.

ricky, won't you reconsider this? "Tell your whimp husband to come home from drama club, or knitting club..."

What's wrong with knitting? When I was single, a bunch of girls i was friends with had a knitting club. and i went, and i learned to knit. there was this cool guy there who was a very advanced knitter, and a great athlete too. knitting is actually pretty cool. i know it doesn't make as much noise as a rifle, but it still brings people together, is fun, is timeless, etc.

if anything, the message of this very funny string of comments is that we need to relax a little and let people pursue their own interests and in fact we might even encourage them to diversify their interests. you ought to try knitting. and based on your come-on to brooke jean, it sounds like you'd do well to join a knitting club to meet some chicks.

and wow, sarah. way to get a lot of comments. this is a good way to collect metrics about how many readers you have...

Samatha,

OK fine, you aren't a liberal. Just a coward and a moron.

If you are scared, stupid, and uniformed about something, be embarrased and try to hide it from everyone until you get over it. Don't post it for everyone to see.

I am sorry that you almost cried when you went shooting. Not sorry that it happened, but sorry for you, that you are that emotionally weak. And then you called HIM crazy.

If you ever get some brains, you could always try growing a spine after that so that loud noises don't make you cry. You must be a real burden for those who have to hang out with you. But hey, at least you aren't a liberal.
Anonymous said…
Oh Samantha, you set yourself up for that one.

Bill, if things don't work out with me and Brooke Jean, I may have to take your advice and try the knitting club thing. I never thought about it as a way to meet women, but it makes sense.

OK, so I'm a little late to the debate. I think guns are no worse than any other semi-dangerous, adrenaline-pumping hobby (paragliding anyone?). Sure, you have the occasional nut-job who shoots up a Burger King for kicks, but crazy people can't be accounted for. A psycho hobbyist might just as well try to stab victims with...say knitting needles. Some, including the blog mistress herself, don't understand the attraction of shooting...which is fine. Chances are we'll never see Sarah expressing her aggressions at the expense of helpless appliances on the business-end of a Chinese assault rifle. But the bizzare phenom to me is the visceral reaction of people who want to prevent others from using guns solely because of fear, unfamiliarity and a complete lack of understanding. In the famous words of Dave Windsor, "Guns don't kill people...bullets do!"

(Sarah, I'm #65 and a first time poster. Hint, hint...)

This post thread doesn't look like a gun ownership debate to me. It looks more lilke a protest against what many readers consider an irresponsible use of a serious weapon. Gun ownership is an important right. The responsible use of guns is an obligation attached to that right. This seems to be the thing that gets peoples' goats. The vid was disturbing because it showed a gun owner being silly with his guns. Lots of people didn't like that. Maybe if he were being silly about something other than life and death weaponry, there wouldn't be so many posts. The really surprising thing, more than any other, was the rapid escalation of nastiness between people of conflicting views. Chill out, people! You want something to really suffer about? Come to Wisconsin.

Does living in Wisconsin gives you special perogative to define silly? As mentioned, no one was hurt. No one was in danger. No laws were broken. It's not like he was shooting apples off of people's heads. I know -plenty- about guns and how to use them in a responsible and enjoyable way. Nothing in that video seemed anything but fun.
