Playing Favorites
I'm all for having favorites. Everyone always says you shouldn't have favorites among your children but I highly doubt anyone actually pulls it off.
When Cher is screaming her head off at 4 am and Pixie is sleeping sweetly, I have a favorite.
When Pixie jumps on my lap during sacrament meeting at church and pulls my shirt down, exposing me to the entire congregation and Cher is happily blowing spit bubbles, I have a favorite.
When Cher yacks all over my freshly washed bedding 10 seconds after I put it on my bed while Pixie is playing tea parties with her stuffed kitties I have a favorite.
When Pixie leaves the freezer door open for 3 hours and all the food goes bad while Cher burbles in her exersaucer you better believe I have a favorite.
Any mother who tells me they don't play favorites is a dirty liar. I've found the trick lies in switching the "favorite" status up often enough so that each kids get equal amounts of favorite time. What could be more fair?
But don't worry, Dr. Spock, when both girls are in their carseats screaming and I'm on an important work phone call in the front seat, I can honestly say I don't have a favorite. There's hope for me yet.
