I've been scammed...

UPDATE:

Thanks to a trusty anonymous commenter to this post, I've proven to be a sucker. A woman I know forwarded me the email about the e.l.f. going out of business thing and I had bought $30 worth of stuff 10 seconds later.

Here's the snopes link debunking this:

I'm such a sucker. Here's hoping the makeup doesn't rot my face off...

Have any of the rest of you ever fallen for a forwarded email scam? What was it and how much cash were you out?

This was my original post...

I have to spread the word on this - Neiman Marcus just bought the makeup line called e.l.f. but they don't want to sell the old product that says e.l.f. on the package so they are selling all the old product for $1. EVERYTHING for $1. This is incredible, high quality makeup. I just got enough for a year for pennies.

Plus, if you enter coupon code "CAROLINA" at checkout, you will get $7.50 off your first $15 of your purchase or 50% off if your order is under $15.

Go to, ladies. All the makeup a gal ever needs is waiting for you!

ELF's makeup has been sold for $1 for years.

Thanks, anon! I hope you responded to this post fast enough so that nobody else followed my lead and got suckered.

I should know better :(

I'm so bummed. I followed your lead. I feel super dumb.

Gah! I'm SO sorry! The lady who told me about had let her whole email address book know so it looks like this isn't going to be nipped in the bud with me.

oh it's not so bad. i really like their makeup and it's only a dollar. didn't it say on snopes that the carolina code does actually work and give you a discount? so really there are worse things to have been scammed about, right?

I just spent an hour Christmas shopping. $146. later....I hope the quality is decent. This is so like me--don't do anything small. Sometimes it just works out fine. I am just glad I came back before I sent this to my entire bookclub. Totally enjoy your site. I found you when looking for halloween costumes last year. Now I am here again through a friend of a friend.

I fell for the exact same Scam email about a year ago! I don't feel so bad because the makeup arrived, and I have actually used some of it. At $1 a product and $5 flat shipping, it wasn't such a bad deal, so I don't feel so dumb. I also conned my mom and sister into buying some of it! I am sure that ELF is loving all these emails going around about them, though!

So, I got this a year ago and bought a bunch of stuff. The e-mail I got said that they had been on Oprah and rather than going out-of-business, they were just starting and this was a promotion. The good news is that I actually really like some of the eye shadow combinations I got and use it all of the time. I also got a bunch of lip-glossy type things and I like those, too. So, you feel stupid for believing an e-mail, but on the other hand, you actually do get some makeup and it is actually not too bad, so its not all a loss.

de lurking... My sister buys this stuff all the time and really likes it. She has super sensitive skin too. Just thought I'd let you know! Enjoy!

Well it was all worth it for the delurk ;)

Thanks for the pep talk, Motherboard - I needed it after I just spent half an hour reading this thread of serious complaints customers have had with this company. Let's hope I get lucky and they don't totally mess everything up!

Here's the thread: http://www0.epinions.com/msg/sec_~forums/show_~threads/cat_id_~10/id_~5395/forum_id_~157/pp_~1/pa_~1#posts

I bought the brush set and a couple eye shadows through them. The brushes are ok - definitely worth it for a buck, but the eye shadows were crap. They clump weird and don't spread evenly over the lid. I probably won't buy any of their product again, but it was worth the money to try it out :)

I got that email about a year ago from my sister. I bought some brushes, lip stuff and mascara (?) and I've really liked it. It was only like $7 or something so I'm not complaining.

what's sad is that this now happens so much that I almost don't believe anything I read or see anymore on line. Like the old guy who was run over in the street in Hartford, CT. I thought for sure that had to be a joke. and sadly it was not.

Wow! I just found the story about the Hartford man here.

I can't believe that nobody did anything and that in the end a police man found him who was there on an unrelated matter. So sad! I wish it weren't true.

Just wanted to let you know that I went and ordered like $30 worth of stuff after reading your first E.L.F. post and then I saw your next one and emailed their customer service and they just sent me an email verifying that they cancelled my order. Now if it doesn't show up on my credit card bill it will just be a good lesson in "if something seems to good to be true it probably is" to me.
