Lightning Strikes Again

Why I can't blog these days:

My mom spent my entire pregnancy telling me that "lightning doesn't strike twice." My first baby was as colicky as they get and I was paralyzed with fear during this pregnancy that colic would strike again. It has. Moms are sneaky liars.

It turns out that only people who sleep can blog. I can't for the life of me put together a single creative thought. Trust me, I've tried. My blogger account is full of posts I've tried to write during the past four weeks, each one more bland than the last. I don't know what to do other than plagiarize other people's blogs and call their witty, cohesive posts my own.

Here's a contest over at Modern Mom I'd like to enter though. I've been stewing it over in my addled brain for a while and can't even start to have an idea of a clever entry. Unless it turns out that Fruity Cheerios cure colic, I probably won't win. But it's a $500 prize - you guys should take a stab at it!

Heh heh.. I figured out that two was my limit as well. Billy was a squealer. But I still had seven more. And I'm glad I did!

Good luck, dahling. Really, I didn't expect you'd get another screamer. But she's so cute! And Penny, oh wow. She's a oner. Worth it? I'd say yes. Over your dead body and bland blogging, but definitely worth it.

Oh, sorry Sarah. That's really really not fun.

Good thing she's a cutie! Did the fact that your first was colicky make her a less terrible two?

Good luck catching a few winks.

Your pain made me laugh. If only because my husband has been telling people what a good baby we have. Yeah, he's good, just not from 2-6am when husband is asleep and I am up with a screaming baby.

I think I'm only able to blog right now because I used to manage college kids and got used to tuning people out.

Someday we will sleep again. Someday we will get four straight hours in a row and it will be GLORIOUS.

as the mother of five...life begins when your youngest is three.

i am so sad for you right now, just hearing that sweet baby in distress is breaking my heart and bringing back way too many painful memories of my own.

hugs sweety. hugs.

ohmygosh sarah!!! I'm completely empathetic- after dealing with a colicky adley I was certain it couldn't happen again with #2! we were trying to console anneke from 8 to 1 am last night- fun times...guess I'm not the only one with 2 in row, (which everyone said couldn't happen)- I was hoping you were having better nights over on the other side of town.

My number three was colicy...her mom and grandma told me that it "ran in the family" and to give her "gripe water". I did and it didn't work, neither did gas drops or anything else (and she was a formula baby so there was not even the "what was mom eating" issue). Nothing worked. She cried for three solid months and then one day, she fell asleep on her tummy and slept for hours... that was it. I was worried about SIDS, but tummy sleeping it was from then on out...it was the only way she would sleep. I don't know if it was the tummy sleeping or if she just grew out of it, but she is a great little sleeper now..but wow, those first months were rough..

I am so sorry!!!

The video of your crying baby made my sleeping baby wake up! Thanks a BUNCH!

Seriously though, I am so sorry Charlotte is weepy. Lets just call her "weepy" instead of "colicy". She's just feeling a bit emotional, right? She's overjoyed that you are her mother and she is crying for joy!

Can you, me and azucar form a secret new-moms club? We could get together between the hours of 2 and 6 am ... oh, wait... I'm busy then...

Sleep is so important. Really and truly, you can bring your kids to my house. Or I could come get them and walk them around your block or take them to your favorite park so you can sleep. Really and really truly. Call me - there's a button on my blog.

My boys ran in to watch the movie when they heard it. Ethan asked, "It it ok? What's going to happen?" and the best one of all, "Is it a caterpillar?" I guess the swaddling confused him.

Could be worse. Somehow.

Wow, I am so sorry!
I used ginger tea mixed with Codi's milk when her tummy bothered her as an infant. It worked well! She has had tummy trouble her whole life and ginger really works.
Hope you get some sleep, and if you want, take a drive up here and I'll hold her inside while you rejuvenate outside with the alpacas :))

Oooo...Rachelle - there's an offer I really shouldn't refuse! I think some 'pacatherapy is just what I need right now.

Doug, you're right - our running theme for this baby is "it could be worse." Penny was WAY more screamy than Charlotte so we can't complain too much. But hey, complaining is so FUN!

S'mee, Life begins again after you have children? I had no idea. I thought I was lost forever. Three more years then. I can do it.

Oh, Sarah, I feel it. My first two were like that. Seriously. Difficult. Babies. There were times I wanted to run away...

Hang in there. I know you probably have already tried everything, but I had some (small) luck with gripewater and a vibrating seat. They would stay in there all night, if it meant they would sleep for more than a few minutes at a time...

For what's it's worth, #3 ( I had nightmares while pregnant that she would be like the first two) had no problems. I'm not sure how that's supposed to make you feel better...

Sending love and prayers your way.

awwwww, she's so cuuuute. Send another video with a little more light on her golden countenance. And give her snugs from her favorite aunt. And buy her a swing if she doesn't have one. Those things save lives. And a vibrating bouncy chair. And yourself a rocking chair. And a vaccuum cleaner to run. And a big bag of earplugs for the rest of the family, and possibly the nieghbors. Good luck.
Sarah,

I'm so sorry that sounds so terrible, but she looks so cute while screaming so loudly. Hope that makes you feel a little better. One tip that I've seen work miracles are little pillows filled with beans placed on their tummys. Nurses in the NICU sweared by them. Also they would turn them on their sides and put foam blocks on either side of them to keep them in that position. Try to get some sleep, if all else fails...ear plugs. She'll never remember.

OH MY GOD! How is that..? How can she...? How can she KEEP SCREAMING with the pacifier in her mouth??? Is that even possible?? I thought that was the whole point of pacifiers, it stopped up their cry hole long enough for them to forget why they were crying and doze off. That... defies physics!

That's it, I'm having my tubes tied. In BOWS. I'll take OTHER people's kids to the zoo...

Sorry the Charlotte Bobcat is a screamer. I don't have clever advice, but may I offer some sympathy? Bring yourselves on up to the Mapleton for a vacation...we have plenty of earplugs.
Poor little bean! She sounds so...mad.

I hope you and she get relief soon!

So sorry Sarah. Lightening does in fact strike repeatedly! For us #1, 2 and 6! After three solid months of trying every tip under the sun with #1, someone asked if I had a swing. Desperate for anything that might help, I drove (yes, probably putting everyone on the road in danger because my body and brains were running on fumes) to the store, bought a swing, brought it home, and set it up immediately. Oh joy, rapture! That miraculous marvel of modern mechanical engineering saved our sanity. I've also read recently about probiotics being effective - who knows? Anyway, baby number one is now a 26-year-old mommy with a masters in Contemporary American Literature (who introduced me to Hollywood Flakes). She put herself through school on scholarships. So maybe sucking in all that extra air during those long crying jags stimulates some highly intelligent brain cells - there's got to be some silver lining!

Here's wishing you enough peaceful moments each day to get you through.
