Dream Job

I have news. Good news, no, fantastic news. This morning I received an email from the editor of Pasadena Now asking me to take as position as a -

FOOD CRITIC! FOOD CRITIC! I'M GOING TO BE A FOOD CRITIC! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?? IT'S EVERYONE'S DREAM JOB AND I -

Uh, sorry about that. As you can see, Hollywood is mildly excited about this development. As I was saying, I'll be doing weekly reviews of new or trendy restaurants in L.A. and have the opportunity to -

EAT, EAT EAT! THEY'LL CATER TO MY EVERY WHIM! NO MORE "JUST WATER FOR ME" NO MORE, "I COULDN'T POSSIBLY FIT IN DESSERT." THE CHEF WILL BRING ME HIS FINEST IN EFFORTS TO WOO MY TASTEBUDS! ALL EYES WILL BE FIXATED ON ME AS I TAKE EACH BITE! I'LL BE THE GOD OF -

Relax there, sweetie, it's just food. Hollywood has been on a low carb diet for over two months and is somewhat fixated on food right now. But back to my news. My restaurant review will appear weekly in Pasadena Now along with photos I take and tidbits from my interview of the head chef and owner. The job isn't paid in cash, but the food is free and -

FOOOOOOOOOOD!! FOOD FOOD FOOD! I'M THE KING OF THE WORLD! BRING ME YOUR POOR, YOUR ENTREES, YOUR DRENCHED IN CREAM -

Okay, this just isn't working. I give up.

I'm sure my wife (Mrs. M) is going to be very VERY jealous. She'll be be posting later no doubt.

Silly question but does Pasadena Now pay for your food? Also, I couldn't help but notice that the article you link to reviews the wine along with the food. That seems kind of typical of the food reviews I have read. How does that work when you're Mormon?

Just re-read and saw that you said the food was free. Doh!

The restaurant doesn't charge anyone for my food. The restaurant owner is just trying to get the best review from me as possible so they put on the dog (hopefully not a real one) and try to be hospitable and delicious. It's quite silly, actually, since I have no idea about food and my reviews are probably going to start along the lines of, "meat gud."

I told the guy from Pasadena Now that I'm Mormon and don't "do" alcohol. He said it wouldn't be a problem and he'd not schedule me for any wine tasting events. Apparently, it is all about the food. I know that wine is a big deal though for a lot of people and I can only imagine that Chef's are going to be upset at my resolution to eat without some fantastic pairing of Merlot. Their problem I guess.

Congratulations! You'll have to give us links over to your reviews!
Awesome. I think the public would like my husband and I as food critics, but restaurants may not...
We're a little brutal.

But I would LOVE to have an offer like that. Hooray for free food!
"my husband and ME" doh. I hate when I make grammatical errors like that. I also hate that blogger won't let me go back and edit my comment.

Congrats!! That's way cool.

That is the best job ever.

If you're ever in need of some inspiration or just a good read, might I recommend "Garlic and Sapphires" by Ruth Reichel. She writes about her time spent as a NY Times food critic. Pretty hilarious stuff.

Congrats, again!

Has the position of a hungry sidekick been filled yet?

Tummy says grrrrrrrrrrrr

Sorry, pflower - even though I've didn't think it possible, my husband is even MORE excited about this than I am. He's been telling me for years that all he wants to do is be a food critic. Now he gets all the advantage of being one (the free meals) with none of the work as I'll be the one writing up the reviews. Of course, I plan on having other people come with me some nights because it's just too fun to keep to ourselves. I need to start a waiting list because I keep promising everyone that I'll take them with me some night. I'm guessing you'd like to be on the list?

Citymama, I've just ordered that book off half.com after you recommendation and a recommendation of a former food critic blogger friend, Carina from The Jet Set (Azucar). I can't wait to get it! Ruth sounds like she's had a lot of wonderfully readable experiences in NY.

Janell, I plan on having a link in the sidebar to Pasadena Now so anyone interested (local mostly I would assume) could go over at any time and see my current reviews. I imagine most of my readers though wouldn't care about food here in L.A.

What an awesome job! Did you apply for it, or did they discover you?

Congrats! I got to write a restaurant review or two when I worked for our local paper. It was great fun. They bring you a ton of food because they want you to sample everything. Way to go!

That sounds like so much fun!! I'm sure you will be fantastic at it! :D
Oh, and if you're making a list of volunteers to go eat with you, I'm game! It's only a 2 1/2 hour drive :)

you are too cool! definitely on your way to making your first million. congrats!

Wow, dreamiest dream job ever! I'm curious about the criteria. Obviously, you're a fabulous writer as all of us readers can attest. Do you also have a foodie background? Did you say this happens EVERY week? Well, call me if you need a babysitter for your kids:) Really and truly.

They will cater to your every whim long before they cator to it. Today Mamie and I were driving around Seattle looking at houses and on the front of one darling little cottage was an oval brass sign that read, "No Solicating." I am quite sure not one single solicator has been spotted in that neighborhood yet, thanks to that sign.

Can't wait to read your food posts!

Congratulations, that is so fantastic! My husband and I used to write his & her restaurant reviews for a dinky little paper, it was so fun. Free food is the BEST. Can't wait till your reviews land you a book deal!

Wonderfully TASTY news!!!

Very happy for you and... for us, your readers. This is going to be fun (add giggles here.) Can't wait for the reviews.

Thanks for all your enthusiasm, guys! I still can't believe it myself.

Mrs. M., I have NO background with food dining. The editor said he was just looking for a local blogger and wanted to see some of my writing samples. I sent him (among other things) my food porn post so maybe it convinced him that I've learned a little through Food Network.

Wendy, his & hers reviews sound fun! I wonder if Adam and I could take an angle like that. I'll be the one that they want to actually write the review, but the idea of giving both the male and female reaction is a great one.

The guy emailed me this morning and says I'm good to go starting next Thursday night. Oh boy, oh boy!!

What the heck? The paper just asked you? How do you get these things to happen to you?
