Box of Love or Box of Hate?

I had no idea my "Box of Love" idea in my previous post would illicit such a gag reflex from some of you. I understand I've outted myself as a softie with that one. Just for fun, everyone please take the poll in the left sidebar and rate the Box of Love idea on a scale of 1 to 10. One being "I'd rather get a box of lard" and 10 being "The Box of Love will save us all!" Let's hear what you think.

Box of Love: Cheesy though it is, this one is my absolute favorite! It's so simple and completely charming if it's given by a child. Trust me, the grandparents will melt. Use any small boxes you'd like and wrap them up (jewlery boxes work very well and are inexpensive at craft stores). Try and get your child to help decorating and coloring the box with ribbons, sequins, glitter, etc. Then print this poem on cardstock and attach to the present:
This is a very special gift
That you can never see.
The reason it's so special is,
It's just for you from me.
Whenever you are happy,
or even feeling blue.
You only have to hold
this gift and know
I think of you.

You never can unwrap it
Please leave the ribbon tied.
Just hold the box close
to your heart,
It's filled with love inside.

Oh damn, I'm the one who voted a one. Sorry, I'm just a shallow girl. If my 2yo did the box of love all on this own, that would be cute. But if my husband helped him with it I'd be like, "Why didn't you take James to Sam's Club and let him pick the color of the ipod?"

Come now...there's not really any love in the box. It's just air, and a little voice that says, "I spent no money on you."

Having been the recipient of this gift, I will proudly go on the record as saying I loathe the box of love.
2. At least I can make tamales with the lard.

Your example box is so small. Is love so small. If I'm going to be given a box of love, I'd prefer it to be a very large box and I'd prefer to be given a new one each day. ;) Of course, I'll take a box of bacon for Christmas, thank you.

I gave it a 10 because I'm all about simple gifts that come from the heart (i.e., quick and easy). Funny enough, I wrote a post recently about a love box I made for my wife. And by "made for my wife" I mean "had my mom make for my wife"( http://www.wifeadvice.com/2007/11/lesson-13-hes-crafty.html)

I agree with Amy. If the person didn't think of it themselves, how can it be "from" them? I've never liked Hallmark cards where the person signs their name after the cheezy poem, cause if you appreciate me so much why cant you write "I appreciate you"

I think this is really just most appropriate for a small child to give to their grandma. I can see my 5-yr-old daughter doing it and Gramma would surely melt like you said. But, if I receive this from my husband? I'd rather have something in the box and let that be the symbol of his love.

I don't know if it would work for mine. I wouldn't say they were hard hearted but it takes quite a lot for them to melt.
Best wishes

My husband thinks the box of love is a great idea. And if he ever gives me one he'll be sleeping on the couch.

HAHAHA, I'm so with Silly Marie.

Homemade presents:

1. The aforementioned tamales
2. Custom CD mix
3. My special caramels
4. Movie made of family pictures
5. Custom hand made Christmas stocking
6. PIE
7. A Painting or drawing

I got a million.

Maybe from a child it would work. From my husband I'd rather have a poem more like this:

This is a very special gift
That you can often see
The reason it's so special is
It's a Lexus.

Hey, a girl can dream.

Sue--that's hilarious!

Yeah, I can see the "box of love" as maybe some girl's camp or young women's lesson memento/visual aid, but I can't see it under the tree...

Although my husband did have the idea to decorate an empty white box to put under the tree to represent the gift you are giving the baby Jesus...? (sorry, that's totally not related, is it?)

Direct quote from my husband: If you gave me the box of love, I would open it up, fart in it, and then hand it right back.

He's a really amazing person.

Oh no. No no no no NO! come on janell. if you put it in a big box the person that you're giving it to will get so exited thinking that it is a big wonderful present, then when they open it they will be all disappointed.

Look, my husbnad duct-tapes my presents in a brown grocery bag- if he took the time to actually wrap a tiny box, it would show me he put some effort into it.

It's corny, but cute too.

I gave it a 4. If I got it for Christmas, it would be a 1. If I got it any other time-10.

Box of love = too cheap to buy a gift. Nononononononononononononono.

Seriously, if you can't get me anything, just get me nothing and tell me you love me. Don't hand me a small piece of clutter and then try to make me feel guilty for tossing it out.

I am with Stephanie! If some special person arranged this for me on just any old day of the week it would melt my heart (as long as I liked them back). But as the only gift on a major gift giving holiday... I don't know about that. I'd probably think it was cute, but would be looking around for my "real" present. But now I know what to get you for Christmas Hollywood ;) hehe.

Am I the only one who thought of this when I read your post? Because that's what Bethany is getting for Christmas. This one simple modification will make your "box of love" a 10 for sure! (Viewer Discretion Advised - link content may not be considered PG 13 by some.)

But a big, empty box is obviously empty due to its light weight.

Ah. Here you go. Free-ish gift ($2 tops if you shop at the dollar store and thrift shop.)

Build Your Own Fort Kit:
Big Box
Markers
Knife

et voila. What more could a person want?

That reminds me of another I found on the net - a "build your own furniture" kit. You get a picture of a piece of wooden furniture (chair, table, anything really) and then put a branch from a tree, leaves and all, inside a brown box. Tape it up, stick the picture of the furniture on the outside and present with gusto.

And ebolaevlis, my fragile little mind is SO distraught over that vid. A word of caution to everyone else, the video is DEFINITELY not PG-13! I do love how SNL gets stars to totally mock themselves though. But I still think Justin Timberlake is a turd.

Lol. How about another variation. "Grown your own furniture." Keep the same format of a picture of a piece of furniture on a box, only put a tree seedling (or seed) inside ^_^

I was talking to my husband again last night about the Box of Love. He said "what's the big deal? You just throw it away anyway."

I said, "no Shoog, you're missing the point. You're supoosed to keep the box forever and ever so you can hug it and kiss it in lieu of that person's actual presence or love thereof."

"Well that's just retarded!" he said.

So my husband is no longer a fan of the Box of Love. Junk in a Box though, that he might actually do. So thanks for that. Really.

I wouldn't be able to resist the ribbon. There's no way it would stay tied. And that really defeats the purpose...argh.

Im so glad I dont know the majority of you people who replied. You seem like a bunch of self absorbed materialistic freaks.

I think the idea is cute, and has been around forever. Id be extremely happy to receive anything this holiday season, including the concept of love in a box.

The season isn't about the price tag, or what you can get. It's about spending time with the ones you love.
