The Great Mouse Giveaway

It's craft night at the homestead. My artsy sisters from Manhattan brought all kinds of projects for us to work on. I chose the mouse ornament project. Before giving me the materials, my sister Annie told me I had to read a story first to understand the project I was about to begin. It was called "Mother's Christmas Mouse" from the October Ensign magazine. If you don't want to read it, I'll summarize. A woman's rheumatic mother made her a Christmas ornament but it was really crazy looking because the mother wasn't able to use her hands very well. The point was that even though the ornament was ugly, she knew her daughter loved her enough to appreciate the effort and treasure the ornament.

So I just HAD to make an ugly mouse ornament. My sister had bought all the supplies required to duplicate the article's ugly mouse and I set to work. My first attempt was indeed ugly, but I was sure I could do worse. My second mouse made my siblings gasp in shock and by the third mouse, I was certain I had ugly down pat. I ended up making 20 mice tonight and so in the spirit of giving, I'd like to share some with you deserving readers.

I'm giving away four of these misunderstood mice with the hope that those who receive them will look past their unsightliness and into their nutty hearts of gold. Love me, love my mice. So here's how you get one. Just leave a comment. Any comment. Yeah, it's that easy. I tried to think up a good contest idea but it's three in the morning and I'm brain dead. I'll draw four comments randomly - the more comments you leave, the better chance you have at winning one of these truly awful prizes.

Sorry, anonymous commenters can't win because I won't know where to send your mouse but feel free to drop a comment anyway. The winners will be announced at the end of the day on Saturday and I'll send your mouse in the mail. They probably won't arrive on time for Christmas, but they'll be fun for scaring the be-jeebers out of stray cats any old day of the week.

Who wants one?

Sounds like a night of fun. I think the second one is not too bad looking.

I kind of thought they were cute too. I liked the third one. It looked like it has glasses.

Eeek......I'm not a mouse fan, but yours are actually cute (because they're not gray and fuzzy).

Be sure to send Ellen one, with her card. ;)

They don't look bad. I also read that story from the Ensign and I enivsioned a mouse a lot scarier!

If I could pick one it would be the second one down. Mostly because the angle of the mouse makes him look like a ninja, ready to trounce anything that stands in his way!

Are those made out of potatoes?

Those mice...bless their hearts....faces only a mother could love I'd say...

for some reason, this post got me thinking of the princess bride:

WRONG! Your ears you keep and I'll tell you why. So that every shriek of every child at seeing your hideousness will be yours to cherish. Every babe that weeps at your approach, every woman who cries out "dear God, what is that thing?" will echo in your perfect ears. That is what "the pain" means. It means I leave you in anguish. Wallowing in freakish misery forever.

Delightful mice! I like the one with the scarf on his/her head.

They're ugly in a way that makes them kind of cute!

The 2nd one down looks like some crazy late night anime character with the scarf on his head.

They are aweful and scary looking. I love the sweetness of the story though. I would gladly take any one of these off your hands if needed.

I want one so bad! One year, my sister gave me a pickle ornament that has been a household treasure each Christmas. Someone in our house (not naming names here) broke it this year, so I need a new ornament to fill the void in my soul. Maybe this heart-wrenching story will make you cheat to ensure I win one!

These people who say the mice are cute, adorable, blah, blah, blah, are blatantly kissing up in order to win. I say they're ugly and I should win one for my honesty. Plus, I love ornaments with a story behind them, and between you and the old lady, what a great story it is!
Janell said…
Wow those are hideous. I'm certain should there be a "Ensign Annual Ugliest Mouse" competition you'd only be beat by a little old lady with a good, ensign-y story.

I love the meeses to peeces!
Heffalump said…
The eyes are staring at me. They look like someone squeezed their little mice head and made their eyes bug out and then they got stuck that way.
I am afraid to comment for fear of winning...
Sarah said…
Kelly is right - these meeces are NOT cute. But now I kind of want to make more so I can give them to everyone. I sent my mom out today to buy some more nuts (they are pecans, hazelnuts and walnuts, not potatoes) so I can crank out some more.

I'll see how many more I can crank out before Christmas and see if I can't give away a bunch. But like Heffalump says, be careful of commenting because you might actually have to receive one of these hideous beasts in the mail. I, personally, would rather receive a severed limb.

OOOHHHHHH MMMAAAAAAAANNNNNNN, I am so impressed with your abilities. You set out to make a movie, you make it. You set out to review products, you review them. You set out to win contests, well, you enter them. You can truly do anything you set out to do including make super UGLY ornaments......I do want one though. I'm going to have to read the story now. I would love to see my kids reaction to them...I wonder if I could make one as ugly as yours have turned out.

My 2 yr old just called it a cuuute spider... go figure
Aubrey said…
ohhh my. You should send these into the ensign, just to show how much you take their stories to heart.

Wow-those are really awful! But since that's what you were going for then I am suitably impressed.

i don't want one at all, especially not the first one that looks like it died a horrible death in my garage. i do enjoy the story, thanks for making it real!
Anonymous said…
I want one! And for me it's a toss up between all of them!
Anonymous said…
The first one looks dead, the second one looks like a flower child and the last three look pretty bad. Can't wait to see what else you came up with!

I have been reading your blog for months now and have not yet posted any comments, but your ugly mice have finally got me. I just wanted the chance to win an ugly little critter

HA! (with loud honking voice)

Holy Toledo, those are some "unique" mice!

As a pet rat owner, I adore rodents, and I love all of your Frankenmice :)

Coincidentally, I have a mouse-nut (wait, nut-mouse?) Christmas tree, and I will reserve a place of honor at the top of said mouse-tree for your mouse should I be lucky enough to win one :)

How can something be so cute and so frightening at the same time? I am impressed with your hot glue gunning skills...hot glue guns scare me, and so do mice, generally speaking.

Okay, I've been slacking on the reading since I thought you were gone. Turns out I've been the one missing! Drat.

I love the one with the green plaid head scarf. Those are just adorable, and look like something my kids would enjoy making. I can't help but think "we're all a little nuts."
