Anonymous Comment Day: Facing Your Securities

After reading a great post today by one of my blogger favorites, Dalene, I decided to idea plunder for my post. Dalene asked her readers to step up and admit what they are good at. She talked about how hard it was for her to admit out loud that she's a good writer. She had to guts to finally admit her strengths publicly. Shocking, know.

It's been ingrained in me not to "brag" so instead I go around touting my inabilities more than my abilities. That can't be good for business. Why not give ourselves a shot? Surely there is something you do fabulously. Brag. Tell us what you are good at. But do it anonymously so that you can really give us the truth (I realize this defeats the point of Dalene's post, but I don't believe many of us are ready for that kind of self-loving). I will change any non-anonymous comments to anonymous as soon as I see them so don't even try. Colleen, I'm going to know it's you when the "I make great pie crust" comment comes in, but I'll try and fake ignorance.

Alright, everyone, let the brag-fest begin!

I'm not Colleen, but I, too, make a great pie crust.

Also not Colleen but I make a good pie crust.

And...

I'm a good sight reader (piano), and a good writer. I also crochet beautiful baby blankets and I am very good at genealogical research.
Anonymous said…
I am great at sewing. I see something that I like and then make it!
Anonymous said…
I'm really good at playing the piano. I'm really good at filling in for people last minute--whether it's baby-sitting, or throwing a meal together, or taking over a meeting, I'm good at stepping in.

I'm also super good in the kitchen, when it comes to pleasing my picky-eater husband.
Anonymous said…
when it comes to pie crust?

nobody is better than me at eating that stuff.

suckaz.

My friends call me Dr. S**** turns out I'm really good at talking people through a crisis.
Anonymous said…
I'm a fabulous photographer, if I do say so myself... which I do. Or did.

I cook awesome meals. I'm awesome on the piano - I've been playing since I was 5, practiced for 4 hours a day for many years, I can sight read amazingly well, and I've accompanied every possible type of choir or singing soloist or group.

I also type really fast (over 120 wpm), knit super-cute baby blankets, make gorgeous cross-stitch samplers, and create beautiful greeting cards.

I'm also awesome at housekeeping, keeping things organized, and schedule maintenance.

Oh yeah, I keep up with the laundry for 5 people, too. (never any backlog - NEVER.)
Anonymous said…
I'm a really loyal friend, can make harmony with any tune, and I make dang cute babies.

This might sound like a strange talent, but I'm a diplomat (not professionally). I'm good at listening and trying to negotiate peace during family arguments and at work. Unfortunately, I have to use my skills a lot.
Anonymous said…
I'm a people person. Others tell me I'm good at making everyone feel comfortable.

I have also developed in to quite a good cook. I make the best cheesecake anyone has ever had, so much so that that's what all my extended family want for their birthdays. Cheesecake.

I am really good at public speaking. I love giving talks, and am frequently asked to guest speak at youth conferences and firesides. I'm never nervous in front of a large group. I find it instead, rather invigorating. Perhaps that makes me an attention hog... which isn't a good thing. But the speaking part is good, right?
Anonymous said…
Oh, don't even get me STARTED!
I'm good at telling stories (truth be hanged!) I'm good at singing, and I'm a decent piano player. I'm a good cook. I think I'm a good dancer. I'm a good driver.

Want to know my deepest darkest secret? I'm good at public speaking. Actually, I studied it in college. And I LIKE it. I love giving talks. I love teaching Relief Society.

There! I feel better now.
Anonymous said…
I'm wonderful at job interviews.
Anonymous said…
I'm super persistent. When others back down-I don't. This means I get what I want in the end. It might take me a little longer, but I have a great life.
Anonymous said…
I am good at problem-solving and troubleshooting in a math/computer/logic sort of way. And I sympathize/empathize well which I think makes me a good sounding board.

I am not a good writer, so I especially appreciate your skills Hollywood. You are really talented at seeing the funny side of life and finding just the right words to share it with the rest of us.

I'm a fantastic lover. My man knows he's got it good.

I'm a good artist. Many people think I should make a business out of the cards I draw. I'm also a fabulous knitter, especially knitting odd ball things. I'm a good listener. A lot of people come to me when they just need someone to vent to. I am also the most fabulous children's story reader. It's my job and a lot of people treat me like a rock satr for it!

Okay, I swear I'm done.
Anonymous said…
I am a master at doing absolutely nothing all day long.

I'm not good at clicking on the anonymous button.

Despite this post's purpose, I can't help but think "I'm terrible at that!" "I definitely can't do that!" when I read everyone else's. But here goes nothing...

I am good at Scrabble. And spelling. And kissing. And if I say I'll do something, you know I'll come through.
Anonymous said…
I'm good at managing our family's finances. God help my husband if I die first. He'll have no clue!
Anonymous said…
I can read people or groups of people really well and respond appropriately. I am artistic. I dont get depressed (so far). I can figure out how to get stuff free, fix things, substitute things, find things, etc. I am artistic, funny., cute and rather spunky. If you know who I am, mention it you-know-where and you get a prize.

For those who know me and read this its a dead give away, but here goes...

I play the flute really well and when I put my mind to it and practice a little I can pretty much play anything you put in front of me, even those pieces with composers names you can't pronounce to save your life.

I am also very good a scrapbooking and listening to others.

I learn very quickly. I am a good writer. I am a good listener.

I am psychic.

I also am queen of doing nothing all day long.

I can always sleep, it doesn't matter if I've had 2 or 3 naps that day, I can sleep all night long.

I can dress myself.

I'm an awesome cook! Even better than my mom! I'm a wonderful and loyal friend. I'm good at loving people, even when it's hard for others to. And I'm very good at empathy, and sticking up for the underdog. Boy that feels good to brag for a change.
Anonymous said…
I'm decent at being creative with things, whether it's crafts or cooking or making up excuses as to why I should continue to do nothing for the entire day.

I am fabulous at tickling my husband.

I'm very good at reading.
Anonymous said…
I can make friends with anyone, anytime. I genuinely care about people and can make real connections with strangers in seconds.

I can do anything I set my mind to. Usually, I end up doing it really well. I love expanding my horizons and discovering hidden talents.
Anonymous said…
I was all excited to brag, but then I saw "This is a PG-13 rated blog. Please word your comments accordingly."

:(

My very best skill aside, I'm also fantastic at making interesting and enjoyable conversation with just about anyone.
Anonymous said…
Yeah, that PG 13 requirement clipped my wings, too, but let's just say I could count on the fingers of one hand how many times it hasn't 'worked' for me...Over a spread of decades, I might add.

I knit very well, even though I'm only in my 20s. I write pretty darn good, and I'm pretty smart.

I know tons of useless trivia. Play the piano very well. I have my own business, three beautiful happy children.

I also read very fast, over 1800 words a minute with 100% comprehension.

And I once won a beauty contest.

I just went to parent teacher conference, and both of my kids' teachers said that my kids were the smartest AND best behaved in the class. One of them got the highest scores on the last standardized test in her class, with most subjects in the 99th percentile. I am taking full credit. HA!

I adore words, and have been told I write well.

And you probably know who I am. Crap.

This is so hard, I too look at what other people are good at and think "I can't do any of those things." But that's not the point of this post is it? I'm a good wife and an ok mother. I can tell you the year of birth of almost everyone in mine and my husbands families.

I not only do I make a better pie crust than Colleen, I make a better pie. (Sorry Colleen it's all about me right now)

I am a fantastic peacemaker in all aspects of life and am able to get along with what others refer to as "the most difficult people".

I have a knack for organizing. Unfortunately for my husband that means some of his stuff gets "lost", its a good thing he doesn't visit the local Goodwill :)

I have a clear head and am able to respond to situations quickly and be flexible.

I can return anything! My family takes me with them all the time... I should start charging! :)

I'm very humble (I totally wouldn't do this if I had to put my name on here).
Anonymous said…
I need miss "I'm good at organizing" to come over to my house...cause I really suck at that. But...other than the "organizing" thing,

I am pretty much the best at everything.

Ask anyone who knows me. They all hate me cause I can do anything. They all love to hate me. Don't you wanna be me?
Ahhhhh...that felt good. really really good. I've wanted to say that for a long time. Now...I have to go back to being all humble and self loathing.
Anonymous said…
I am great at keeping in touch with people and maintaining friendships. Seriously, don't be my friend if you don't want me to stay in touch with you for the rest of your life.

Really fun to read everyone's responses--it makes you take a second look at how our culture devalues things it should not--i mean, where would we be without the organizers, the negotiators, the amazing bakers and lovers?? Hard to put a monetary value on them, I guess. Very refreshing to hear some reinforcement given to these "invaluable" skills.
As for me, uh, I'm a gal who loves crunching numbers and thinking about how businesses can be run better. I think about it all the time for my business, but I'm also the sort of person who goes into a restaurant or shop and just knows the place is going to fail if they don't do X Y Z things. Sometimes I really feel like writing to a business owner anonymously: I know your business is going to fail if you don't take care of these things.

Does anyone remember that episode of The Office when they were asked to name something they do well? Phillis said she was good at computer stuff-like email and spreadsheets. And then Angela shot her down. Hilarious. I miss The Office.

I'm an really good pianist. I spent years working on this talent, but when people ask if I'm good all I respond is, "Well, I don't know" cuz nobody likes bragging.
Anonymous said…
I'm good at deflecting a terrible verbal attack by a teenager and turning it into a loving conversation that resolves the problem instead of getting back at them and escalating the problem. Seriously, that is an acquired skill and a lifesaver for both sides!

I'm also good at being a listening ear for my kids. They know they are safe with me and spend a lot of time confiding in me.

I love being a mother. It deepens my ability to be a Christian by giving me the ultimate challenges to the spirit within. I hope I pass the test!

Since I am culturally obligated to attend occasional potlucks, I'm amazingly skilled at concocting inexpensive, nutritious food that is the first offering to disappear from the buffet.

I'm good at the use of big words, too. I don't do it much since it gets lots of strange looks. I tend to stick to short words.

I'm a good writer.

I have top-notch customer service skills.

I'm good at taking charge in group situations.

1800 words a minute with 100% comprehension...HA I guess it depends on what you are reading.(children's books) Nobody can comprehend 100% of some types of writing. Sorry to be negative but this bragging has gotten me cynical.

PS I am good at shoveling manure.

My supervising gynecologist told me: "You're the best medical student I've ever had at pelvic exams."

I'm a great lover and keep my man very satisfied.

I'm good at writing term papers and reports.

I'm very generous and would share everything with anyone if I could.

I'm a great napper; doesn't matter how many naps in a day, I can sleep through the night.

I have great hair color; I especially and truly love the streaks of silver running through it.

Hey quit knocking my 1800 words a minute. It was a test issued while I was in college and that was the results! Granted it's not that fast when I'm reading the book of Isaiah, but really I can read a good sized novel in about an hour and a half. :)

OH and I am an awesome fast pitch softball pitcher and a great 400m runner.

And Finally, I'm prettier than all my friends from High School! (Never said that one out loud before but it feels good)

I'll feel funny about everything I just said so good thing it's anonymous!

I'm good at staying cool. You know, in times of turmoil or drama. I can think rationally and make decisions.

I'm also pretty good at not getting my feelings hurt. I give people the benefit of the doubt instead of taking offense.

I'm really good at remembering things about people, names in particular, but also other details. Sometimes it makes me feel creepy, but I think mostly it just makes people feel special.

I also love practicing hospitality and people keep coming over, so I think I must be good at that.

Also, I am an awesome lover.

And a really good mom (:

I'm good at touting my own horn!

I'm great at quilting, scrapbooking, organizing, cleaning, cooking, baking, & singing. I'm told I'm a great mom, so I'll take that, too!

I do all of the above with 4 kids - and I do it all on a daily basis - seriously.

I am very good at always looking at the bright side of things; the glass is half full, etc.

I am an awesome friend. I love to serve my friends and am not afraid to ask for help when I need it, so I have some greatly balanced friendships - you know, the kind where the give and take is nicely balanced? It's hard to find those sometimes.

I am very good at creating trusting relationships very quickly. This has helped me tremendously in my career.

People often praise me for my patience. I have given my husband a lot of slack for many years in regard to not being ready to have children until he finds the right career and can enable me to stay at home if I choose to. In many ways, I've put my life on hold to help him find his. Although this has been hard for me, I've tried to keep a smile on my face and patiently plan for the future. I also look at the 'pros' of being older and wiser as we start our family. See me looking at 'the bright side' of things? :)

My husband won't play me at Boggle either. I have never lost, and I generally kick trash in other word games as well. In college I held the record for the longest word in Boggle-- 11 letters. I don't remember the word but I remember how everyone's mouth dropped when I proudly read out my word.

Hollywood, maybe your next party should be a Boggle tournament!

Nobody will ever read down this far, but I have to say I'm good at clogging and tap dancing. I know, that's kinda scraping the bottom of the barrel, but I read through the other comments and started getting depressed because I don't have most of them myself and would like to. But I am a good dancer, I pick up the moves quick and I'm fast. So that's my pat on the back for today.
