Adventures in Prototyping

I've been working with a factory in China for the past few weeks trying to get some of my animals ready for mass production. In first stage, the factory looks at my sample piece, then tries to reproduce it as a prototype. After I okay the prototype, mass production of the animals can begin.

You'd think this would be a relatively simple task. After all, I've already made the animals and the factory simply needs to look at my pictures and do the exact same thing. Let's take Lester the Giraffe for example. He's a fine young mammal, endowed with many handsome characteristics. I sent this photograph to the factory to help them manufacture a prototype:

A few days later, I got back this picture of their first attempt:

Not bad, but I had a few concerns, one of which was the size of the eyes was too large. I asked them to make the eyes about half the size that they were in their prototpye. So they got to work and today I received their second attempt:

Okay. So obviously we're dealing with some communication issues here.

Boob eyes... I hate to say it, but you're totally right.

This made me giggle! But it really doesn't look too far off so at least you are on the right track! Very exciting! I wonder if they are confused about the little antler things...it looks like they made them in to an extra set of ears. Maybe he is a super-sensory giraffe.

I have to say....that "second attempt" is certainly arresting! My China-man hubby just told me "bigger eyes is usually better." So, there you have it. ;-) Good luck!

my dad deals with this ALL The time... communication can be tricky enough without having to translate "boob eyes" into Chinese :)

Whhooo!!

And I really need to go to sleep - I just somehow changed the word "deals" into "tells" and thought that is one crazy saying for a Dad to have!

The thing I noticed about their first attempt was that they made it out of cheetah print fabric.
Could you email them a pattern?

Lester is cute.

Yeah - the cheetah print was a little weird. Luckily they got the print right the second time.

And really, who am I to say that bigger boob eyes aren't beautiful? Bigger is always better, right?

Oh, this Chinese communication thing is funny indeed. We ordered our dining room furniture from a place in Kowloong. Asked them to cover the seats with a cream colored damask. So they said that was great and got going on the order. At the last minute I double checked on the fabric they put on the seats. "Denim" was their encouraging answer. Wow, did I have to get detailed to explain that I didn't want bluejeans fabric on my nice new dining room chairs...

By the way, GOOD LUCK, you entrepreneure, you!

Make that Kowloon.

I know a kid who spent some time in China, would you like me to ask him if he needs a small translating job?

The eyes in their second attempt look as if someone had tried to squeeze the life out of him!

Please, please tell me you have an expert middleman who will oversee the quality throughout the entire run, mange the shipping and taxes while important them into the states, and manage how many to actually order (to avoid surplus and shortage).

It's very exciting that you're taking you business "to the next level!"

You are going to be rich. And by the way, I totally laughed out loud at the "Boob eyes" comment.

So is Lester concerned about his twin's identity crisis, with the leopard and cow prints?

This is one of the most hilarious stories I have read on a blog! The photos just top it off. You must let us know what happens with the little guy.

I like the one with the big eyes! But it has to be made with a little tag around the neck with the story of how it got its big eyes - hilarious!

Hey you! It's me Sarah your old roommate! And I live in China. Believe me. Know all the craziness that comes along with production in China! (Hubby's been doing it for a while. Manufactures sofas.) It's nuts! That Janell girl is a smart girl. It's really difficult to do anything seriously here without someone on this side who is on it. It's surprising how many headaches go along with development and production and exporting. It's a stressful difficult job doing any kind of production in China. Just is. And that's why those middlemen have a job! Saves you loads of headaches in the long run. I have friends here who do sourcing who I can recommend if you are intereted. One even does zoobies (also cute plush toys...) and they are exported now to about 13 countries. They're really cute too. Love your ideas. Good luck with everything!

Not long ago, I have thought about something like that, but I did not realize you are so deep, it seems that I need to continuously strengthen the learning!
